In the Schwemmiweg district of St. Gallen, blockchain technology is being used for the trade of excess solar energy power within the local people. A reported 25% of solar power consumed during that time period was from the neighbors in the district. The Swiss Federal Government’s energy ministry with Swiss companies and universities all support the one-year Quartierstrom project.
The transactions for energy between participants are handled directly. In most cases buyers and sellers have what are named “mini computers” which are programmed to issue tenders every 15 minutes to acquire or sell solar energy through the blockchain software.
