Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) – whose purpose is to use blockchain and related technologies to make mobility safer, greener, cheaper and more accessible, members Honda Motor and General Motors take part in a research project which will research the possibility of electric vehicles to stabilize the supply of power in next generation smart grids.
The development of the data exchange between power grids and electric vehicles will facilitate the concept to eventually let EV owners store power in their car batteries and exchange it with the grid. Essentially creating a revenue stream for the owners.
The joint project is set to begin at the end of this month, with the possibility of other members to join later in the study. Although the transfer of surplus power between electric cars and home is already in practice though connecting a larger number of electric vehicles to urban power grids is yet to have a solution.
