After a marathon negotiation that began on 30 June, in Brussels EU leaders failed to discover a consensus on the Union’s key positions – the presidencies of the European Fee and Council, the European Central Financial institution and the Excessive Consultant for Exterior Motion – and postponed the choice to 2 July.

Talks stumbled particularly on the appointment of the President of the Fee, as Manfred Weber, the candidate of the Individuals’s Get together, which received the European elections, and the Social Democrats’ Frans Timmermans suffered vetoes from each blocs. Within the absence of consensus, EU leaders could put the nominations to a vote.
